The song Awake, the second single from the album Trouble Above, is my personal
favorite from the album and captures a feeling of lying awake at night, staring at the
ceiling, or out the window out at the world. When writing the song, I created a melody (in the
second verse) that sounded like it would be sung. I focused on plenty of variation in both use
of melodies and of the drumming pattern.
The track "Smaller Figment" is included as a b-side. It was still a rough demo when production
on the album finished, and I turned it into a finished product specifically for this single.
During the second chorus/bridge it utilizes a melody that was recycled from an older demo of a
song that was scrapped (titled "fool").
