The Maelstrom EP, although short, was a very ambitious project. I
strived to get all songs as best as they possibly could be to make the most
out of the release. The philosophy behind this album was to utilize
multiple demos and rethinking of a track to make it even more solid.
Yes, believe it or not (though I'm sure this isn't hard to believe), a
majority of previous songs did not have a lot of extra editing/retooling done
to it after the first time around. Many songs were done in one sitting, a few
were done over a couple days or a week, and a few more had several
demos/variations before the final product. I mostly haven't been satisfied
with the results of this (obviously) and giving it a second look helps flaws
become more apparent and inspiration comes better.
Being that this is easily the best collection of music from Modus Operanic up
to this point, I considered this a "farewell" album at the time, since my
plans after this album were to dedicate all future songwriting to The Air
Castles, as evidenced by several songs from this album being re-mixed and
sequenced for the debut album, Transoceanic. As evidenced by the fact
that I've made several more albums since this, I decided to ride my streak of
finally successful songwriting and continue writing music for myself.
Somewhat of a concept album, Maelstrom's songs are themed around a large
storm or hurricane hitting a coastal city, and acts as a musical representation
of its events and effects.
