The debut LP from Modus Operanic, Exploding City Lights was an important
learning experience for me and my first true test of putting together songs into a
coherent collection. I tried out a lot of various styles and genres in these songs, which
may be the only thing that really unites these songs into one unit. I was still very new
with both FL Studio and songwriting in general, so a majority of these tracks are rough,
lack flow and interest, and in many cases, even a beat. The potential was there, and some
of the melodies might show evidence of that, but I had a long way to go to get a grip on
this and I was eager to find my footing.
The songs themselves range from quick, mostly random and sporadic interludes ("FPI") to
a long and tedious experiment in progressive songwriting that is mostly a failure ("Caught
In The Cross Breeze"). I tried drum loops as well as sequencing drums myself (which mostly
just shows my complete lack of understanding of drums at the time). I experimented with
the instruments that FL Studio provides, eventually becoming comfortable with the pads,
sytrus synths and guitar instruments for future efforts. Undoubtedly this is my most
diverse collection of songs, albeit nowhere near showcasing the range of talent that I
developed with time and practice. Everyone has to start somewhere - I started knowing that
I wanted to make music, and decided to write and learn simultaneously.
